Tide Maintenance Shop Contract Awarded

HRT awarded a contract yesterday to construct the maintenance and storage facility for The Tide. It is a $10.9 million contract and because of NSU paranoia, er concerns, is 11.7% over budget.

NSU: since you demanded - excuse me, requested - these changes, perhaps HRT should bill you for the 11.7% or $1.5 million?

While NSU may be a little extreme in its views, it is not right for HRT to use them as a scapegoat like they are. If you look at their website, HRT received three bids for the building and one of them was over $2.6 million less than the one they have awarded (hmmm... about 11% under the budget). This is the third light rail project HRT has awarded to the second bidder and one of the low bidders is still suing them for it!

Looking further, you can see there was 96 plan holders for the project and while not all of them were builders, at least a dozen were. Why did they only get three bids? The contractors stated in the Q&A section that there was not sufficient time to build the building in the contract. Was the bid real high because they knew they would be penalized for being late? Now... the answers also show that the award date was to be August 11 and here it is November 9... is that 3 month delay the fault of NSU also? Is that what the $1.5 million more the newspaper article talked about is really for?

Maybe the best idea would be for HRT to be honest and tell the taxpayers how bad it really is.
